Since we got to play with a couple of new toys in October, thanks to Wes, I thought the two items should to be reviewed.

Ares Defense Systems - Shrike 5.56 Belt Fed Upper
It worked good on my collapsible stock BushMaster M16 lower using the Ares supplied buffer spring, spacer washer and H2 buffer. Also it was required to change out the bolt hold open lever, which is not a problem with my lower as I switch between the Colt 9mm SMG upper and other 5.56X45 uppers including a LMG upper and I have a quick change cotter pin instauled instead of the standard roll pin. We fired about 1.5 - 2K rounds and had very few stopages. None in the 16" barrel but a few in the 20" barrel. We were firing only brass cased 5.56X45 ammo but I would have like to try Wolf just to see if it would work. I also would have liked to try it with a shorty barrel to see how it would run but since Wes lives in a non-class 3 state he does not have any under 16" barrels for it. The Shrike would be a great addition to any M16 owner as it assembles like any standard upper except you would have a quick change barrel. I would like to see these on the commercial market. With the addition of the Shrike, it truly makes the AR15 / M16 family of weapons the most versatile weapon system in the world.

Akins Accelerator for Ruger 10-22 - Update...
Product on hold due to new ATF letter, see website for details 12-30-06
Several different folks dumped mag after mag down range at 600 - 700 rpm with no stopages. Considering it is a .22 LR, that is saying a lot. The Akins Accelerator is an ATF approved, non-NFA item. No tax stamp required. Normally I would not review a non-NFA related item but this has to be the most fun, closest to legal Full Auto product on the market. This product really does work. For more information or to order one, yes they are in stock ready to ship, visit

by clicking on the highlighted link. The price, considering the cost of any transferable .22 caliber NFA machine gun, is reasonable.

As I already have a Ciener .22 LR Caliber Conversion for the M16 that works great, so I'm not in the market for this item myself. I would love to see the folks at Akins Accelerator develop this item for other firearms such as an SKS or AKM. If they do, I will be buying one or more.
