So you have legal NFA firearms and want to take them to one of the many machine gun shoots (such as the twice a year Knob Creek Range shoots) that take place all over the country at different dates during the year. Before you can cross state lines (from your home state to a end destination in another state), you will have to get permission from the BATF in Washington to do so. You will need to fill out and send in a form 5320.20 and wait for it's return before you can travel with your NFA items. These are to be mailed in and take between 7 to 30 days before they are returned. Under special conditions, such as you just found out about a shoot and you only have a day before the shoot, you can call BATF in Washington and talk to your examiner. The NFA Branch will allow you to FAX in your filled out form 5320.20 (see below for contact information) and they will FAX it back to you. The other method is to plan ahead for all the states that you plan to attend shoots at, but do not know when the dates are going to be, and send your 5320.20 with the travel dates showing a whole year (1-1-02 through 12-31-02). As most folks in the NFA community have found out, this is the best approach, as even with the internet and its speed of information, most shoots do not give the out of state folks enough time to send in their forms. All the required BATF forms can be found on PDF format at Dan BrewsTitleII.com, of which there is also a link on our link page and at Tom Bowers subguns.com. Questions about travel can be fielded by going to the subguns.com Machinegun Discussion Board, visiting the James Bardwell NFA law link or by visiting or calling the Washington D.C. NFA branch of the BATF. Where to send form 5320.20 for BATF travel approval: Bureau of Alcolhol, Tobacco and Firearms NFA Branch 5th Floor 650 Mass. Ave. NW Washington, DC 20226 BATF NFA Branch Washington DC phone: 202-927-8330. BATF NFA Branch Washington DC fax: 202-927-8601. We do love to travel to the different Machinegun Shoots all over the country. We enjoy being able to shoot and getting to meeting all the good folks at all of the shoots. Due to work, the children and their school activities, we are unable to attend but a few of the different shoots each year. Gone are the days when we could just "go" at a minutes notice. We still go to the Knob Creek Machine Gun shoot twice a year and have been able to attend shoots down in Florida. In a couple of years, when the children are older, we will be able to attend more shoots. |
